Episode 3: Jonathan and Alison

"Island From Hell"

Jonathan Klay and Alison Teal are marooned on an island in the Maldives archipelago for 21 days and clash with sunburn, sand fleas and starvation.

Surviving the "Island from Hell": A Recap of Naked and Afraid in the Maldives

When you think of the Maldives, you probably picture luxury overwater bungalows and cocktails. But for Jonathan Clay and Alison Teal, this paradise quickly became a nightmare.

In Season 1, Episode 3 of Naked and Afraid, these two strangers faced one of the most punishing environments in the show's history on what they dubbed the "island from hell".Here is a look at how a Recon Marine and a global surfer girl survived 21 days of scorching heat, dehydration, and starvation.

The Survivalists and the Setting

The episode paired two very different personalities. Jonathan Clay entered as a former Recon Marine and sniper, a self-described "workout maniac" with a primitive survival rating (PSR) of 6.9. His partner, Alison Teal, was a surfer and "adventure model" raised by traveling parents in remote corners of the world, entering with a PSR of 8.0.They were dropped on a small island in the Indian Ocean, just 40 miles from the equator. The location featured temperatures hitting a staggering 120°F, jagged coral reefs, and shark-infested waters.

The Sun and the Sickness

The challenge began with an unprecedented heatwave. Despite his military toughness, Jonathan was immediately incapacitated by a severe, blistering full-body sunburn that left him immobile for days. While Jonathan lay in the shelter in agony, Alison took charge, weaving palm frond hats and baskets and gathering coconuts for hydration.

Desperation for fresh water led to the pair's biggest conflict. Jonathan expended massive energy digging a well and, ignoring Alison’s warnings about safety, drank the murky water unfiltered. The result was immediate and severe intestinal distress, further weakening him. Simultaneously, Alison battled debilitating menstrual cramps, leaving both survivalists in a perilous physical state.

Teamwork and The Hunt for Protein

For the vast majority of the 21 days, the pair survived on a starvation diet. They subsisted almost entirely on coconuts and noni leaves. The lack of protein caused their energy levels to plummet, and the local reef offered very little sea life due to high water temperatures killing off the coral.

However, they did manage two critical catches that likely saved them from tapping out:

• The Eel: Desperate for protein, they spotted a moray eel in the reef. After Jonathan cut himself on the razor-sharp coral trying to catch it, Alison stepped in and successfully killed the aggressive creature, providing their first real meal.

• The Clam: Later, seeking redemption for his earlier incapacitation, Jonathan managed to dive and chisel out a massive clam with his bare hands.

Total Food Consumed: Over the course of three weeks, their entire intake consisted of coconuts, leaves, one eel, and one clam.

The Final Storm and Extraction

Just as they regained some strength, the Maldives threw one last curveball: a massive storm with 70 mph winds. They spent their final nights freezing and fearful their shelter would blow away, huddled together for warmth. Despite the brutal conditions, they managed to construct a raft using a bait trap and washed-up water bottles to swim toward their extraction vessel.

The Toll: Weight Loss and Final Stats

The physical toll of the "island from hell" was evident the moment they stepped onto the rescue boat. Surviving on a calorie deficit for 21 days resulted in significant weight loss for both participants:

• Jonathan: Lost 18 lbs.

• Alison: Lost 14 lbs.

Despite the friction and the agony, both survivalists saw their ratings improve. Experts praised Alison’s knowledge of plant life and Jonathan’s mental fortitude to push through injury.

Jonathan’s PSR rose to 7.2, and Alison’s increased to 8.4. As Jonathan admitted at the end, the challenge was a humbling experience where teamwork—not just military grit—was the key to survival.
